Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship banner

What we want

  • Apprenticeships which give young people ‘salon ready’ skills needed by employers
  • A funding model which works for small businesses
  • Apprenticeships recognised as the best route into our industry

What are we doing

  • Working with the Trailblazer group of employers, including NHF members, to develop new apprenticeship standards for hairdressing, barbering and beauty
  • Working with qualifications bodies to develop practical tests, similar to trade tests, to make sure apprentices have reached ‘salon ready’ standard
  • Campaigning against government policy on employers making compulsory cash contributions towards the cost of Apprenticeship training and assessment, on top of the Apprenticeship wages employers already pay
  • Campaigning for employers to choose between funding paid to them direct, or through training providers (as now) and to reduce unnecessary administration and bureaucracy
  • Developing high quality careers information for schools, parents and young people which encourage them to go into Apprenticeships rather than staying on at school or going to college
  • Working with the Low Pay Commission to review Apprenticeship rates for the National Minimum Wage
