When taking on an apprentice in your salon or barbershop you must ensure:

  1. Your apprentice has the right to work in the UK.
  2. You pay the correct apprenticeship rate or National Minimum Wage. Find out more.
  3. Your apprentice would normally be expected to work for at least 30 hours a week (21 or more hours in Northern Ireland). This includes off-the-job training (eg at a college or training provider).
  4. Your apprentice works with experienced staff and has a proper work role that enables them to gain the job-specific skills and knowledge they need.
  5. Your apprentice takes time out to study at a college or training provider as part of the working week.
  6. You have a good working relationship with the training provider and are clear about key issues such as costs and funding, how the apprenticeship will be delivered, and arrangements for off-the-job training.
  7. You have a signed apprenticeship agreement and signed commitment statement setting out how you and the training provider will work towards the successful completion of the apprenticeship.   8. You take the necessary steps to ensure the health and safety of your apprentice.
