The NHBF’s annual industry statistics for 2023 are now available.
The NHBF’s annual industry statistics offer a valuable overview of the state of the hair, beauty and barbering industries in the UK. The data in the report includes success rates, turnover, start-up numbers, working patterns, apprenticeships, age, gender and industry trends.
Key findings for 2023 include:
- The hair and beauty industry generated £4.56bn in turnover in 2022-2023.
- The number of hair & beauty businesses in the UK increased by 870 (2%) between March 2022 and March 2023

The number of business turning over less than £50k increased but those turning over £50-249k reduced.

The total workforce declined again by 18,647 (7%) in 2022. The number of male employees has risen slightly whilst the number of female employees has declined.

46% of the workforce are aged 16-34. The number of 16-24 year-olds working in the sector has fallen from 56,105 in 2019 to 35,935 in 2022 (by 36%).

The number of apprenticeships starts continues to decline in three nations of the UK in 2022-23 after a slight rise in 2021-22.
Official definitions of the hair and beauty industry include:
Hair washing, trimming and cutting, setting, dyeing, tinting, waving, straightening and similar activities for men and women, barbering, shaving and beard trimming, trichology, facial massage, manicure and pedicure, make-up, electrolysis and other beauty treatments, but not the manufacture of wigs.
