UK Economy Contracts as Free COVID Testing Ends

According to recently released official figures, the UK economy experienced a contraction of 0.3% in April. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that all major sectors of the economy contributed to this decline. However, the main factor behind the contraction was the end of free COVID testing, which was a pandemic-related anomaly.

Guide for Employers: Menstrual Health and Menopause Support

Small businesses can now download the free guide, Menstruation, Menstrual Health, and Menopause in the Workplace Standard, provided by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

This guide offers recommendations for workplace adjustments and strategies to help businesses meet the needs of employees experiencing Menopause or menstruation. It aims to support businesses in retaining experienced and talented individuals by providing them with the necessary support.

 

Campaigning for Fair Wages

Last week, the NHBF had a productive meeting with the Low Pay Commission, which advises the government on National Minimum Wage/National Living Wage (NMW/NLW) rates. During the meeting, we answered questions based on our written evidence, which included data and insights from the quarterly State of the Industry surveys and Industry Statistics.

We emphasised the impact of recent rises in NMW/NLW rates and the current challenges faced by businesses in affording staff and apprentices in the current economic environment. The commissioners posed various questions regarding apprentices, sector recruitment, and the shift towards self-employment. We made a strong case for freezing wage rates in the tax year 2024-25 and called for restraint in any future rises.
