The NHF has published a series of online start-up guides to help hairdressing, barbering and beauty entrepreneurs take the plunge and launch their own businesses.
With government figures suggesting as many as 20% of start-ups fail within their first year, and half fail within three years, it’s important to really think through what’s involved in running a business.
The free NHF guides, which can be found at http://www.nhf.info/salon-start-up-documents/, set out practical tips and advice on how to get started. They also encourage would-be salon owners to think about how they will build a profitable and long-term successful business once their salon is up and running.
The guides, for hairdressing, beauty and barbering, cover topics including:
- how to get started
- effective market research
- renting vs buying
- fitting out your salon
- writing a business plan
- accessing finance
- taxes, VAT and accounting
- managing your staff
- sustaining momentum and taking your salon to the next level
NHF chief executive Hilary Hall said:
The economy may be recovering but it is still tough on the high street, which makes it all the more important start-ups do their homework to maximise their chances of success.
At the NHF we want to encourage businesses to do things properly right from the start. Being a great hairdresser, barber or beautician is not by itself a guarantee of success anymore. If you’re serious about going into business, these three guides outline the things you need to be thinking about and planning for well in advance.
