As part of the government’s apprenticeship reforms, the level 2 Trailblazer beauty make-up consultant and nail services technician apprenticeship standards and assessment plans at level 2 have finally been approved and are ready for delivery in England.

Sir Gerry Berragan, Chief Executive Officer at the Institute for Apprenticeships, in a letter to the chair said “A big thank you for the work that you and the other members of the Beauty trailblazer group have completed to get to this point. I recognise the significant commitment and expertise required to develop an apprenticeship standard that meets the needs of employers, provides meaningful training and careers for apprentices and satisfies the apprenticeship requirements.  I would like to thank you for your perseverance and commitment in splitting the beauty professional standard into these three separate standards.

These standards will make apprentices more ‘job ready’ when they finish training

George Hammer, the chair of the Trailblazer Steering Group for beauty professionals, added: “My thanks go out to all the employers from across the beauty sector who have put in considerable time and effort to make these standards a reality. These standards will make apprentices more ‘job ready’ when they finish training and so I feel what we’ve achieved will make a real difference.”

Small employers with less than 50 employees who take on 16-18-year olds or those aged 19-24 who have been in care, or who have a local authority care plan will not have to pay anything towards the cost of apprenticeship training and assessment.  An incentive payment of £1000 will also be available to them and to their training provider to support the additional costs of training these groups.  Employers taking on older apprentices currently are expected to contribute 10% of the cost of the apprenticeship. However, from April 2019 this will be reduced to 5% of the cost.
